Our local champions
     UNDEFEATED- Conejo Valley United Soccer Club Girls U13 team finishes undefeated in pool play at the Camino Real Thousand Oaks Classic 2007 Soccer Tournament. The team won second place overall. Team members are Brooke Jones, Jessica McElroy, Sienna Robings, Brooke Luther, Alexis Snider, Catherine Grimes, Sky Oldfield, Courtney Ennis, Hannah Taylor, Lauren Latham, Destinee Reed, Katie Aamoth, Avonlea Ware, Paige Levine, Alexa Yarnell, Kaylyn Cassar and Emily Sullivan. Coaches are Mike Taylor and Marty Yarnell, with trainer Lara Heifner.

Winners in our midst
     PEAK- The Conejo Valley Apex Boys U16 soccer team celebrates their victory in a preliminary tournament in Encinitas, Calif., on Aug. 11 and 12. The Apex lost to the Burbank Fury in the finals the following weekend in Thousand Oaks after the teams played a scoreless game through a pair of five-minute overtimes. Young athletes join basketball superstar at summer camp
     HEIR JORDANS- Yerba Buena students Seth Bertolucci (top row, far left) and Hunter Mattox (top row, second from right) join NBA star Michael Jordan at his Flight School Summer Camp at UC Santa Barbara. Their team won the championship for the 10-year-olds category. Hunter Mattox was also named to the All Star Team. More than 750 children ages 8 to 18 from around the country participated in the camp.

Golf tourney benefits the homebound
      Shop Ahoy, a nonprofit organization responsible for delivering nearly 5,000 grocery orders to homebound adults in Ventura County, will host a golf tournament at 11:45 a.m. Mon., Sept. 24 at Sterling Hills Golf Course, 901 Sterling Hills Drive, Camarillo.

      The Calabasas players have taken it upon themselves to improve. Of course, the proverbial kick in the pants from a new coach didn't hurt the cause, either. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Lance Martin, the Coyotes have shown a renewed focus this offseason.

      Westlake, Moorpark defenses: Behind stout defensive efforts, the Marmonte League's top two teams from a year ago both recorded shutouts in their season openers. Playing on the island of Oahu, the Warriors defeated Waipahu 210, while the Musketeers downed Mayfair, 12-0.

      Ventura (0-1) at Agoura (0-0) Outlook: It's safe to assume Ventura will enter this contest with a chip on its shoulder after losing to Camarillo 28-21 at home during last weekend's season opener. That loss, coupled with Agoura's 14-7 win over Ventura a year ago, means the Chargers can expect a fired up group of Cougars on Friday night.

CHS girls' tennis squad remains team to beat in Marmonte League

      For the last five years it's been tough to find a better girls' tennis team than the one at Calabasas High. The Coyotes will once again enter the season as the defending Marmonte League champions. CHS also carries a league winning streak that spans five seasons.

Conejo Classic draws largest field in tournament history
Twenty four boys' water polo teams will compete in two-day event

      The Conejo Classic Water Polo Tournament keeps getting bigger every year. This year, the event has expanded to 24 boys' teams and four different venues over two actionpacked days. Host pools include Thousand Oaks, Westlake and Newbury Park high schools, as well as Mavericks Gym in Moorpark, home of the Moorpark High aquatics program.

Clausen to start for Notre Dame
      Oaks Christian graduate Jimmy Clausen has been named Notre Dame's starting quarterback for Saturday's game at Penn State. The freshman signal-caller, who ranks as the state's all-time leader in touchdowns, was undefeated as a starter in high school.
