Community Learning Center created in record time

      Las Virgenes Community Learning Center, an alternative elementary school based at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas, opened Wednesday with 154 students, seven teachers, a wellfunded Parent Faculty Association and a fresh approach to delivering standard-based education to youngsters in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Proceeds to benefit dance program
      The Calabasas High School Dance Team will host a car wash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., Sept. 8 in the school parking lot at 22855 W. Mulholland Hwy., Calabasas. Prices are $5 with ASB identification, $7 for small cars and $10 large cars.

Collaborative fundraising group supports new school

      The fundraising arm of the new Las Virgenes Community Learning Center is as different as the school. Called CAPT'n'S for "Collabora tive Alliance Parents Teachers and Students," the parentfacultystudent group is being run by parent Deana Camberg.

      GOT THE BEAT- Drummer Ben Zelico, 13, of Oak Park puts on quite a drumming display as he performs with the band Innuendo at The Lakes at Thousand Oaks last Thursday. The Lakes was hosting a Back to School Bounce event to mark the end of summer.

Banned books on display
      Books that people have attempted to ban will be on exhibit Sept. 4 through 28 at California Lutheran University's Pearson Library. "Banned Books: From a Historical Perspective" will be held in observance of Banned Books Week, which the American Library Association created in 1982 to remind people of the freedom to read.
