Upgrades for Calabasas Road
      Drivers who travel Calabasas Road may have noticed an improvement in traffic flow since the city installed a new striping pattern to help move cars along. Turning lanes have been placed in front of Calabasas' Bob Smith BMW and 101 West Acura automobile dealerships.

Park officials tired of unruly skateboarders
      Summertime skateboarders are once again drawing the ire of the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District. According to park officials, 385 skateboarders have been given formal warnings by park rangers duirng the past three months for unlawfully boarding on district property, compared to 225 warnings handed out from May through July a year ago.

Las Virgenes wants to extend school tax
      The Las Virgenes Unified School District board of trustees wants to extend Measure E, the $98-per-year parcel tax, for eight years. Board members agreed to have the measure placed on the Nov. 6 ballot for the voters to decide.

Westlake election creates interest
      The nomination period for two Westlake Village City Council seats opened on July 16, but so far only one candidate, Carol Kirschbaum, has filed the required papers to run in the November election. The seats up for election belong to council members Philippa Klessig and Jim Bruno. Klessig said she would seek reelection, but Bruno has said he would not.

Assemblymember Brownley makes local stop
     JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers SPEAK OUT- Julia Brownley (D-Woodland Hills) addresses the Conejo Valley Democratic Club at the Cameron Center in Thousand Oaks last Sunday. Brownley, who holds education and the environment among her top legislative priorities, represents Calabasas, Oak Park, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills. Her 2007-08 legislative package includes bills related to education, wage discrimination, hospital staffing, e-waste recycling and clean water, and she wants to ensure that state-funded sex education is bias-free.

Calif. Wildlife Center to host Wing Ding

Seasoned rock climber loves scaling his local Santa Monica Mountains
      As a youngster, David Katz and his friends used to play mountain climber with garden hoses or boating ropes and hike around the Lake Sherwood area. At 47, he isn't playing anymore. Katz, a native of Westlake Village, spent his whole life climbing the terrain of the Santa Monica Mountains. He's traveled to climb in Alaska, Canada and much of Europe.

      A group of Oak Park kids and dads didn't let the nearly 100-degree heat stop them from running, biking and swimming for a good cause on Friday after noon, July 27. Student has all the right moves
      Dennis Neymit, 12, of Agoura Hills, won in the Pacific Coast Open chess tournament on July 21 and 22 at the Renaissance Agoura Hills Hotel. Dennis tied for first place in his section along with three adults and received a $600 cash prize. He plans to contribute some of the money to a veterans' charity.
