Aizuss elected president of medical association
      Dr. David Aizuss, an ophthalmologist living in Calabasas, has been elected the 136th president of the Los Angeles County Medical Association. Aizuss was sworn in as LACMA president during a ceremony at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel Los Angeles.

ALS support group meets again July 28
      The ALS Association, Greater Los Angeles Chapter will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sat., July 28 in the community room at 31200 Oak Crest Drive, Westlake Village. The guest speaker will be Tori Cohen, registered dietician from Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center. Cohen will discuss nutritional needs for ALS patients.

A smart way to shape up for good
      There's a new tool in the battle of the bulge- it's called the Glycemic Index. The index ranks all forms of carbohydrates on a scale of zero to 100 on how they affect blood sugar levels and consequently insulin levels. Foods that are broken down into sugar more slowly during digestion and do not cause sudden blood sugar spikes are ranked low on the GI.

Garage sale to benefit woman with lymphoma
      Agoura Hills resident Jamie Burlingame is hosting a garage sale to help out a friend in need. The garage sale, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sat., July 28 at her home at 27816 Via Amistosa in Agoura Hills, will raise funds for Tina Maskan, also of Agoura Hills. Maskan, 20, was diagnosed last year with stage three Hodgkins lymphoma.

Community pitches in for boy with cancer
     BILL SPARKES/Acorn Newspapers GIFT OF LIFE- Mary Silverio, a medical lab technician from Los Angeles prepares Lou Spadaccini of Calabasas who is donating blood at a clinic held at Chaparral Elementary School last week. Donations will help Kevin Cordasco, a 10-year-old Chaparral student who is battling cancer, as well as other patients at Children's Hospital.
