Keep children out of streets
This is to respond to the letter written by Ms. Billig, "No need to be rude about it." I have lived in the Oak Park area for 14 years. In those 14 years this has been my observation: What gives you the right to let your children play in the street? The street is for cars, trucks, etc. The city has spent millions of dollars on parks and recreation.

Parents at fault
Lorena Billig is upset about a "speeder" at 20 miles per hour in her neighborhood while her children are playing in the street apparently with her permission. Wake up, Lorena. It is against the law for children to play in any street.

Thief targets medicine cabinet
I would like to share something with Acorn readers that recently happened to me. The reason I am sharing this is to possibly help people connect the dots. Sometimes when people speak up, they get information that could help another person make sense of something they feel is wrong but can't quite put their finger on.

Belated fireworks
To the Agoura Hills City Council and all who were responsible for the fun at the park and fireworks display on Sun., July 8, thank you, thank you, thank you. I go to the park every year and enjoy the family atmosphere, the food, the activities and the fireworks display. I am never disappointed, and this year was no exception.

Calabasas really sparkled
Congratulations to the city of Calabasas on its wonderful Fourth of July Celebration. It is an outstanding community event. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I have noticed that some people who live on streets named for our original great patriots have complaints about this recognition of the sacrifices of the founding fathers of our nation. How ironical.

ave the nation
I want my country back. Last week, Harriet Miers (a lawyer, former White House counsel and failed U.S. Supreme Court nominee), didn't just refuse to answer certain questions based on executive privilege when subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee, but instead, acting on orders from the White House, she refused to show up, period.

Special treatment
It is always remarkable to read letters from the 20 some percent of Americans still backing the White House. One such letter in the last issue claimed that illegal immigrants wanted to be called "unregistered Democrats.

Upset over administration's 'arrogance'
In response to Carl Lane's letter of July 12, why CNN has to reaffirm the viewers that they are "the most trusted name in news" and that Fox News is "fair and balanced." It takes more to be persuaded. Yes, the broadcast news is distorted and one sided. The voices of dissent are eliminated, for example, the Donahue show before the war in Iraq.

Deputies and good Samaritans help woman in need
I was recently involved in an accident on Pacific Coast Highway which afforded me the opportunity to experience my tax dollars at work. I have to say I was very impressed. One of our Lost Hills Sheriff's deputies was there almost immediately and, after checking in on me, took charge of the scene.

HOAs are 'scaremongering'
People buy the houses here because they like the look of the houses, and it's a good school district and it's on the edge of a great wilderness area. The homeowners' outdated rule book comes in a very poor third. I do not think renters are shown the HOA book of rules by the landlords because the rules would deter people from renting their properties.

Wrong note
Doesn't any one proofread? I was appalled at the mistake in the July 12 opinion editorial. To call George Gershwin "Gershman" is practically blasphemy. I suppose the headline "It'ss summertime, and the livin's not all that easy" can be forgiven as an artistic or stylistic choice, but not for Mr. Gershwin.
