Common applications
      We're just a few weeks into summer, but many high school seniors are already working on college applications. In the past, some students worried that using the Common Application rather than an institution's own application might harm their prospects for admission.

Reaching out to other kids
     HELPING HAND- Jake Fratkin, a seventh-grade student at A.E. Wright, distributes games and toys to children at Los Angeles County Department of Children & Family Services in Chatsworth. Through Congregation Or Ami in Calabasas, Jake has been involved with a social action program to benefit abused and neglected children in foster care. Earlier in the year, Jake raised $500 to purchase backto-school items for the children.

      The Boys & Girls Clubs organization, wellknown for its afterschool programs, plans to build a new facility at Lindero Canyon Middle School in Agoura Hills. The Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Education approved the construction last month.

Thespians on the trail of a fairy tale puzzle
     MOTHER GOOSE MYSTERY- A crew of unlikely investigators looks into the mystery of the missing Mother Goose in the latest Gypsies in a Trunk Fairy Tales in the Park, as performed at Foxfield Park and Rancho Simi Amphitheater last week. "CSI: Mother Goose" came off without a hitch, thanks to cast members, from left, Reid Ripley, Nikki Morrow, Chris Carnicelli, Dustin Brewer, Sarah Johnson and Rosanne Diesel. The troupe will perform the show again in Camarillo at 11:30 a.m. at 1605 E. Burnley Street on July 14.

Learn a foreign language
      UCLA Extension will offer four-day Weekend Immersion Workshops from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sat. and Sun., Aug. 4, 5, 11 and 12. Designed to prepare participants for travel to foreign countries, the workshops teach basic language skills and the vocabulary needed for travel and everyday life.
