Each year, Flag Day rekindles our patriotic spirit

Motorcycle deputies receive wildfire training
      The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station hosted a training day last weekend that focused on how deputies should respond to local wild land fires. In attendance were more than two dozen motorcycle deputies assigned to various units throughout the county of Los Angeles. The motor deputies are equipped to be the first on the scene during wild land fires.

Snakes alive! Unusual climate conditions bring out rattlers galore
      Buddha, a 9-year-old yellow Lab, was spending a Sunday doing what dogs do in sprawling backyards. After bounding in and out of the nooks and crannies of his Old Agoura yard, Buddha cornered an adult rattlesnake coiled around a planter by the pool.

      The inaugural Patricia Soteras student scholarship awards were presented last week at the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas by local dignitaries and members of the Agoura/Oak Park/Calabasas Chamber of Commerce. Soteras, who died in October 2006, was the Chamber's former executive director.

Local artist/historian passes away
      A memorial service is planned for Sat., June 16 to honor the life of Carlos Lacamara, a longtime Calabasas resident and artist who was dedicated to the study and revival of the city. Lacamara married Adria, an opera singer and model, more than 50 years ago. After the fall of the Fulgencio Bautista regime in Cuba, the couple fled to Washington, D.C.

Yoga classes to help girls entering middle school
      The transition from elementary school to middle school can be a difficult time for young girls. A special class is now being offered to help ease this passage on Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. starting Aug. 19 at Westlake Yoga Studio, 2277 Townsgate Road, No. 208, Westlake Village. There will be no class Labor Day weekend.

Farmers' Market knee deep in fruit
Harvest is ripening early this year
      The cold freeze of 2007 has positively impacted this year's harvest of stone fruits- fruits with pits- as farmers report that shoppers can expect a plentiful crop. The stone fruit season runs from May through October. Ken Lee of Ken's Top Notch Produce based in Reedley, Calif., said it's a record year for 2007. "This is a better crop than the last.

Camps meet at Yerba Buena, White Oak schools
      Triunfo YMCA summer camp will begin Mon., June 18, and a camp for summer school students is also on the YMCA's summer calendar. The Triunfo YMCA, which serves Agoura Hills, Oak Park and Westlake Village, offers camps for children from kindergarten through eighth grades and a counselor-in-training program for ninth- and 10th-graders.

      Flag Day, celebrated in the United States on June 14, commemorates the adoption of the American flag by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially set June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. An Act of Congress established National Flag Day in August 1949.
