'Gate her up'

In response to the May 3 letter by Richard Iazzetta regarding gates in Oak Park, I must say that I think gates are a great idea. I say, "Gate her up!" Now, of course, the issue here is where to put the gates.

It seems as though your reason for gating Regency Park and Chambord is that your community, a small area of Oak Park, has been the target of vandalism recently.

Just take a look at the Sheriff's Blotter in the same issue of The Acorn as your letter. It states, "Somebody vandalized with graffiti the bridge on Conifer Street west of Parkview Drive on April 23. Two similar incidents were reported . . . on Birchwood Avenue. Schooling buildings in the 100 block of Satinwood Avenue were similarly targeted . . . graffiti vandalism also occurred on Medea Creek Trail, south of Smoketree."

I must also add that my mailbox has been destroyed three times since I moved to Oak Park 14 years ago.

So the question here is where to put the gates to protect all of Oak Park. How about across Kanan at Tamarind, just past the "Welcome to Oak Park" sign? I'm all for it.

Clearly you can't possibly be saying that the homes in Regency and Chambord are more important than the homes in other areas of Oak Park? Why, that would make you look like a snob, and by your protests in your letter regarding how you "appeared" on your article, you definitely aren't a snob, right? On the other hand, there's that old saying, "If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck . . ." Lori Andrews Oak Park
