Local colleges on guard after shootings
      As college faculty members and students everywhere struggled to comprehend last week's tragic shootings at Virginia Tech University, authorities at Cal State Channel Islands dealt with an April 19 Internet incident that hinted at similar danger on the Camarillo campus.

Next, Vivian will take her project, which investigated whether common elements could be used to fight bacteria, to compete at the state level.

Medea Creek student takes first place at fair
      Medea Creek Middle School student Vivian Rotenstein's project placed first in the Junior Division's microbiology category at the 53rd annual Ventura County Science Fair, held April 17 to 19 at Seaside Park in Ventura. Her research project on bacteria will go on to the state competition May 21 and 22 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Oaks Christian to present 'Dancing for Darfur' benefit
      The Genocide Awareness Club at Oaks Christian High School is organizing a "Dancing for Darfur" fundraiser at 8 p.m. Sat., May 19 at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza, 880 S. Westlake Blvd., Westlake Village. Because of limited space, only 600 students from area high schools will be admitted. Tickets are $40 and will be sold beginning April 30.

Westlake Village student earns master's degree
      Joan Mary Dodd of Westlake Village has earned a Master of Education degree from Whitworth College, a private liberal arts col lege in Spokane, Wash. The school is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and enrolls 2,500 students.

KCLU receives three awards
Station qualifies for national competition
      California Lutheran University's National Public Radio station, KCLUFM, has received three Edward R. Murrow Awards, which qualifies the station as a nominee for national awards in the smallmarket radio category, according to CLU President John Sladek. The awards came on the heels of one of the station's most successful membership drives, he said.
