Summer internships available for art majors

Paid arts internships will be available for college undergraduates in Los Angeles County this summer.

The board of supervisors funds the program annually through the County Arts Commission, which this year awarded grants totaling $530,000 to 90 performing, literary, media and municipal arts organizations throughout Los Angeles County.

Descriptions of and contacts for the 130 internship positions are posted on the Arts Commission's website. The positions are searchable by region, arts discipline, professional field and keyword.

Interested undergraduates should apply directly to the organization offering the internship, not the Arts Commission.

College undergraduates either attending school or residing in the county of Los Angeles are eligible for the internships, which pay $350 per week for 10 weeks and offer educational and arts networking activities.

Through the program, interns gain an understanding of the work involved in nonprofit arts administration and the role of the arts in a community and develop business skills that can be put to use in their future careers.

Examples of county internship experiences include a theater festival assistant to work at the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival, a cultural affairs intern to work at the city of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division, and a public relations and marketing intern to work at the Young Musician's Foundation.
