Waxman wants safe climate legislation
      U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Los Angeles), together with more than 125 House colleagues, introduced the Safe Climate Act of 2007. The legislation is based on what scientists have concluded the United States must do to avoid dangerous, irreversible warming of the planet and would significantly reduce U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases.

School district employee discovers phone company overcharge
      It pays to check your phone bill. At the Las Virgenes Unified School District the payoff was big- very big. Donald McCombs, a cable technician for the district, discovered that the phone company had been overcharging the school district for more than a decade. AT&T agreed to a partial reimbursement of $47,000.

Planning for the future
      The city of Calabasas is working on an update to its General Plan and all residents of Calabasas are encouraged to play a part in the process. The General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) has met three times and will hold the first in a series of workshops for the public to attend and participate in.

Oak View continuation high school receives top California honor
      Oak View High School in Oak Park has received recognition once again as a top continuation high school in California. It's the second time in six years Oak View earned the distinction, which is awarded by the state Department of Education. The honor came after a thorough application process that included an oncampus visit by a team of principals from other continuation high schools.

Medea Creek principal promoted
      After 17 years, Laurel Ford is finally graduating from middle school. Ford, the longtime principal of Oak Park's Medea Creek Middle School, will move up to the district level as director of instructional services for all five Oak Park Unified schools. The change is effective July 1.

New calendar gives students week off
Thanksgiving break will now be Monday through Friday
      The Las Virgenes Unified School District has overhauled its calendar for the next three years, and the agenda now includes a full week off for the Thanksgiving holiday. Assistant superintendent of personnel Dan Stepenosky and a committee of teachers and parents created three new calendars for teachers and administrators to consider.

Local filmmakers find way to The Method Fest
      Rita Rani grew up in Calabasas, but traveled to the other side of the world and back to make her first movie. Rani, a UCLA performing arts graduate, moved to Bombay, India, to begin her career as an actress. She worked in theater and commercials while continuing to train as a classical Indian dancer.

'Waitress' heads festival lineup
      "Waitress," the late actress/ filmmaker Adrienne Shelly's romantic comedy starring Keri Russell, has been selected as the opening night film at The Method Fest independent film festival starting this week in Calabasas. "Waitress" will screen at 7 p.m. Thurs., March 29 at the Motion Picture and Television Fund's Louis B. Mayer Theatre.

CLU receives major gifts
      California Lutheran University has recently received several major gifts, each between $1 million and $5 million. + Natural Sciences. Jim and Sue Swenson of Dana Point have pledged $5 million to enhance the science facilities. The donation will help fund the construction of a new science building that will provide expanded research opportunities for faculty and students.

Monarch's boys' gymnastics team wins big
      The boys' team from Monarch's Gymnastics competed in the 16th annual Peter Vidmar Men's Gymnastics Invitational in March. A total of 479 gymnasts from 46 clubs in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. competed. Level 4 scoring is a high of green card, followed by purple, yellow and white.

Agoura club gives libraries book about women who are making a difference
      To promote awareness of International Women's Month in March, the Agoura Valley Woman's Club donated copies of the book, "Imagining Ourselves, Global Voices from a New Generation of Women" to local public and high school libraries. The book presents the photography, paintings, poetry, fiction, songs and essays of 105 young women from 47 countries.

      The Conejo Valley Mental Health Professionals Association has created a new "Meet and Greet" program for people interested in mental health issues.
