      Major changes are coming for the Ralphs grocery store on Kanan Road in Agoura Hills. Open since 1983, the store will be remodeled into an upscale Ralphs Fresh Fare.

Agoura Hills approves faster speed limits
      Thirteen Agoura Hills streets that had been slammed as speed traps by ticketed drivers will have faster speed limits posted. A recently completed traffic study also identified three sections of Agoura Road- - between Ladyface Circle and Kanan Road, from Kanan Road to Palo Comado Canyon, and from Palo Comado Canyon to Liberty Canyon- - for a change from 40 mph to 45 mph.

New meaning of tree-lined street
     KENNETH REHMAN/Special to The Acorn TOPPLED- A mature pine tree blocks Bowfield Avenue in Thousand Oaks after falling to the ground at about 10 a.m. last Sunday. Police and Thousand Oaks city crews responded quickly. The tree was cut up and removed within one hour, said Kenneth Rehman, a bystander.

Arbor Day event in Calabasas
      There will be an Arbor Day celebration from 9 a.m. to noon Sat., March 10 at Wild Walnut Park at the corner of Mulholland Highway and Old Topanga Canyon Road in Calabasas. Activities include a children's tree planting activity and an official ceremony at 11 a.m. The city of Calabasas will be presented with the 2006 Tree City USA award by the National Association of State Foresters.

Affiliated with Paws for Healing, Clifford, Esther, Bailey and Barkley spent March 2 at Oak Hills as part of the national Read Across America program sponsored by the National Education Association to promote reading.

Friendship Circle walks the walk
      The Conejo Valley Friendship Circle will hold its second annual Friendship Walk from 1 to 4 p.m. Sun., March 18 in Agoura Hills to raise funds to support programs for special needs children and their families. The walk will begin at Canwood Street, off the 101 Freeway at the Reyes Adobe exit, and end at Sumac Park, 6000 Calmfield Ave.

Calabasas High grad wins Oscar
      Martin Scorsese may be the most publicly celebrated director this year, winning his first Oscar after getting beat out five times, but a local filmmaker is on cloud nine after also taking home an Academy Award himself. Ari Sandel, a Calabasas High School graduate, took home the golden statue for best live action short at the Oscars late last month.

Girl and her dog are tough to beat
      Amanda Prince, 12, of Agoura Hills, and Rogan, her 2year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, have had quite a run in their first year of agility competition. Amanda was awarded Outstanding Junior Handler of the Year for 2006 at an awards banquet hosted by Valley Hills Obedience Club at Cal State Northridge on Sun., Feb. 11.

The annual event raises funds for the student council, which uses proceeds to purchase a gift for the school and to contribute to a local charity. Last year the student council bought a wood podium for the school and gave funds to the Agoura Hills Library.

      Cadet Peter G. Zink, son of Donald and Haf Zink, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the U.S. Military Academy. To earn this distinction, a cadet must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 in all courses. Zink graduated from Westlake High School in 2003. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2007 and be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.

      So I write this column at 30 years of age with a brand-new pacemaker in my chest. I'm very frightened that I had to get a pacemaker at such a young age. In my usual fashion, I worry excessively and obsessively. Every little muscle twitch or gas pain near my heart makes me think my heart is going bad.
