Senior Retreat offers college scholarships
      The Agoura Hills Senior Retreat is offering $1,000 "Seniors to Seniors" scholarships to 12thgraders from Oak Park and Agoura high schools. To qualify, students must write an essay about what their grandparents mean to them. A winner will be chosen from each school.

Teens receive Congressional awards
      U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly (RThousand Oaks) presented Congressional Award medals to Ventura County teenagers during a ceremony at Gallegly's district office Feb. 21. Local students honored are Mona Derentz, 18, Thousand Oaks, gold medal; Ryan Krebs, 16, Moorpark, bronze and silver medals; and Lauren Seckar, 16, Simi Valley, bronze medal.

Oak Park bands battle
      Oak Park High School's second annual Battle of the Bands takes place tomorrow, Fri., March 2 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the OPHS Pavilion. The six bands, "Something Non-Existent," "Hydro Hot and the Hybrid Buffalos," "My High Society," "Allison," "Spencer" and "Lingus," will compete for gift certificates and monetary prizes.

A tree and his friend
      FRUITFUL ENDEAVOR- Eric Winikoff as The Boy gathers apples that have fallen from the branches of his selfless friend The Tree, played by Ryan Rosenheim, in a performance of Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree" at Sumac Elementary School recently. The show was one of five popular children's books brought to life by Hilary Boss' combined fourth- and fifth-grade class at the school.

Kindergarten registration to begin for Las Virgenes district
April 4 at all eight elementary schools
      Registration for the September 2007 kindergarten class will begin Wed., April 4 at all eight elementary schools in the Las Virgenes Unified School District. Registration for students entering grades 1 through 5 will start Mon., April 16. Parents may sign up between 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. weekdays.

      The Oak Park Schools Community Group will meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thurs., March 8 at the Shadow Ridge Homeowners Association Clubhouse, 653 Indian Oak Lane. The organization's work groups will present their findings to the main group. New attendees are welcome.

Round Meadows donates $1,000 worth of books to sister school
      Philanthropy is being taught at Round Meadow Elementary School in Calabasas, and students this year have had many opportunities to learn firsthand what it means to care about students beyond their own school gates. Round Meadow students donated $1,000 worth of books to their sister school, Arminta Street Elementary in North Hollywood.

Huntington Learning centers receive official accreditation
Centers are first local supplementary educators to receive this honor
      Huntington Learning Centers in Woodland Hills and Westlake Village have received official accreditation status from the Commission on International and TransRegional Accreditation. The centers have also been awarded accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
