      A headline for last week's story about the Styrofoam ban in Calabasas incorrectly stated that the "law goes into effect next week." While the ordinance banning polystyrene products was adopted Feb. 21, the actual prohibition doesn't begin for one year.

Helping reduce water runoff
      The Las Virgenes Municipal Water District is hoping to have 100 local homeowners enrolled in a voluntary program that will advise them how to reduce excess runoff. So far, just one resident is participating, but hopes are high that others will take interest.

Westlake Village springs a big leak

No injuries were reported from the accident. Below left, the accident created quite a scene before the hydrant was finally capped off.

Candidate's passion for open space prompts campaign
      When Dale Reicheneder moved to Calabasas in 1987 as a junior at Pepperdine University, it was to a home away from home, the Malibu Meadows Apartments. Twenty years later, he wants a chance to help run the city. Reicheneder and Toby Keeler are challenging incumbents Dennis Washburn and Barry Groveman in the March 6 election for City Council.

Foundation seeks trustee
      The Community Foundation for Oak Park Board of Trustees is seeking a resident of Oak Park to fill a vacant position on the board. The board normally meets quarterly. The foundation was founded in 1979 and supports volunteer efforts in the community as well as raising funds for community programs and projects.

Leonis Adobe hosts bake day
      The Leonis Adobe Museum will host a baking social from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., March 10 at 23537 Calabasas Road, Calabasas. Participants may bring a preprepared item with a maximum two-hour cooking time to bake in the museum's beehive adobe oven.

      What does it take to put on a carnival? Bev Futterman of Oak Park knows firsthand the many details needed to make this kind of large-scale party a success. Every March for nearly a decade, Futterman has chaired an annual Purim Carnival for Temple Beth Haverim in Agoura Hills.

      The Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley has received a $21,525 donation through Macy's Department stores' Thanks for Sharing Campaign. Macy's customers and employees raised more than $10 million for the American Heart Association, America's Second Harvest, The United Way and the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Gem show to shine at Ventura Fairgrounds
      The 45th annual Gem, Mineral, Lapidary and Fossil Show of the Ventura Gem and Mineral Society will be March 3 and 4 at Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura. Times are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat.and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sun. The show will feature 50 displays of gems, minerals, fossils and handcrafted jewelry from local private collections.

      The Calabasas Environmental Commission presented its 2006 Carl Gibbs Environmental Excellence Award to the Peters family of Calabasas for their dedication to the streams, trees and natural beauty found throughout the community. The late Carl Gibbs was a prominent environmental commissioner and one of the city's founders.

Class to cover babysitting basics, first aid
      The city of Calabasas Community Services Department will offer a babysitting class from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sat., March 3 at De Anza Park, 3701 Lost Hills Road. The class will cover the business of babysitting, family interviews, professional behavior, problem solving and decision making skills, telephone safety, baby care, and basic first aid and CPR/choking skills for children and infants.
