With concerns constantly in the news about the growing problem of childhood obesity, parents at Red Oak Elementary School in Oak Park are trying to do something to combat the trend. In December, parent volunteers launched the Friday Fitness Club, a structured exercise program. Held every other Friday during lunch, the program is open to all students in grades one through five. Nominations for the California 2006-07 Teacher of the Year award are being accepted through March 1, according to award sponsor Teachers' Insurance Plan. The award will include $1,000 for the winning teacher and a $500 grant to the teacher's school. YOU SAY YOU WANT A REVOLUTION- Fifth graders at Red Oak Elementary School in Oak Park participate in a reenactment of the American Revolutionary War era. Dressed in costumes from the era, students take on the roles of historical figures and become experts on the people and events that led to the birth of the nation. More ...
