School district finalizes teacher contract
Healthcare was a bone of contention
      After months of debate over teacher pay raises and health and retirement benefits, the Las Virgenes Unified School District and the Las Virgenes Educators Association, the union representing teachers, have reached agreement. Teachers won a 3 percent salary hike retroactive to July, plus an additional 3 percent raise effective Feb. 1.

Oak Park school bond under microscope
      Sixty Oak Park residents on opposing sides of the H6 school bond issue defeated in November met Thurs., Jan. 11, to discuss why the measure failed and what steps the school district might want to take next. Organized by concerned residents and community leaders, the forum was billed as a grassroots effort to support the school district in the wake of the failed bond.

      Corner Pocket, a band formed by three Lindero Canyon Middle School seventhgraders, will give a benefit concert for Max of A Million Dreams Foundation at noon Sun., Feb. 4 in Hees Hall at Lupin Hill Elementary School, 26210 Adamor Road, Calabasas.

Agoura High student wins essay contest about teacher
      Stephen Corwin, 17, loves mathematics, but it was his knack for writing that landed him, his math teacher Steve Bacharach and Agoura High School in the limelight. Stephen entered a nationwide Texas Instruments essay contest asking students to demonstrate how a teacher has affected a pupil's academic success by using a TI graphing calculator.

Comedy Sportz to host benefit
      The Oak Park High School Comedy Sportz will host a special charity benefit at 7:15 p.m. Fri., Jan. 26 in the OPHS Performing Arts Pavilion. The event is to raise funds for Transplant Recipients International Organization, a nonprofit group that works to improve the quality of life for transplant recipents, donors and their families.

Calabasas High's night of music
      Calabasas High School's new grand piano took center stage at the school's standing-room-only winter concert recently. The concert, directed by Josh Barroll and Aaron Kohen, featured two allfemale choirs, Harmony and Vivace, a co-ed choir called Maestoso, two a cappella groups, Bare Rhythm and Unstrumental, and the school's wind ensemble.

Grads may apply to Fellows Program
      College graduates are invited to apply for the 2007-08 Capital Fellows Program. "This 11-month program gives college graduates the opportunity of a lifetime to become fulltime policy assistants," said Assemblymember Julia Brownley (D-Woodland Hills).
