From soaps to scholar
      Actor/writer John Loprieno of Westlake Village is excited to share his insights with theater students at Moorpark College. He points out that actors need flexibility to succeed in the industry, much as his own career has changed direction over the years.

      We sometimes forget- we Americans who've been sanitized and coddled by cute Disneyesque versions of such things- that the fairy tale (from the French word feerie, meaning illusion ) was originally meant as a cautionary fable, a piece of folklore told to terrify children into obeying, not wandering off into trouble or danger.

Beatles tribute coming to Civic Arts Plaza
      Cruisin Oldies Concerts will present "Ticket To Ride: The Ultimate Tribute To The Beatles" from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Sat., Feb. 17 at the Countrywide Performing Arts Center, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd. The two-hour show celebrates Beatlemania and is a musical history of the band.

Agoura High School to sponsor Valentine's dance
      Agoura High School's ASB and Charger Club will sponsor an inaugural Valentine's Day Dinner Dance from 7 p.m. to midnight Sat., Feb. 10 at the First Neighborhood Community Center, 31830 Village Center Road, Westlake Village. The dance is open to adults ages 21 and older.

Peace Officers Association presents benefit show
      The Peace Officers Association of Ventura County will present their annual benefit concert at 2 p.m. Sun., Feb. 11 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. This year's show is "Country Couples," featuring tributes to Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Shania Twain and others.

South African group to perform
      Ladysmith Black Mambazo will perform at 8 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 1 at Pepperdine University's Smothers Theatre, 24255 Pacific Coast Hwy., Malibu. Tickets are $40 and are available by calling (310) 506-4522 or through Ticketmaster, (213) 365-3500. The eight-member a cappella group from South Africa has been performing since the 1960s.

Chamber music concert slated
      A chamber music ensemble will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sat., Feb. 3 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 32111 Watergate Road, Westlake Village. The program will include two works for cello and piano by late Baroque composer Francois Francouer and Spanish composer Joaquin Nin, as well as the Piano and Strings Quartet by Joaquin Turina and the Schubert C Major Quintet for Strings.
