Rotary Club to host varied speakers

The Rotary Club of Calabasas/Agoura Hills hosts luncheon meetings at 12:10 p.m. every Thursday at the Native Caf , 23536 Calabasas Road, Calabasas. The public is welcome. Cost is Rotarians and guests $14; casual visitors $17. For information, call (818) 888-0138 or (818) 773-1351.

The program on Thurs., Aug. 3 will be "Backstage at the Tonight Show," featuring Don Sweeney. Sweeney joined "The Tonight Show" in 1975 as assistant to Doc Severinsen and was with the show through Johnny Carson's retirement and three years into Jay Leno's reign.

According to the club, "Here's a chance to hear an extremely entertaining raconteur, who was privileged to operate in a backstage venue off limits to most of us." Sweeney's new book, "Backstage at the Tonight Show," was released in June.

John Purdy will be the guest speaker on Thurs., Aug. 10. Purdy is a producer of large entertainment events. His recent tour with the "Star Trek" show required eight sea containers.He will reveal the planning and work that goes into putting on these large-scale events.
