Businessman has double standard

Several years ago I was actively involved in the organization of residents and businesses that opposed the Costco development in Westlake Village. Mr. Jonathan Greenspan was one of the principal leaders in that group. One of my duties was to raise revenues to fund the cost of printed materials, mailings, posters, etc. I personally made phone calls to many local businesses to ask for contributions. Costco pricing practices have historically had major adverse effects on local businesses.

I contacted Mr. Jess Ruff of Lumber City/Do-it Center in Agoura Hills for a donation. He was one of the very few business owners that I called who would not contribute anything. I explained the negative impact that this development might have on fellow business owners. Mr. Ruf indicated to me that he was in favor of the Costco project.

Ms. Tabbi's letter outlines Mr. Ruf's recent contributions to the community. I appreciate his involvement today in local affairs and respect his rights to make contributions as he sees fit. I do remember being disappointed back then when he chose not to support his business brethren in the Costco opposition. David Halpert Agoura Hills
