Don't desecrate Old Glory Although it is not law, No. Section 8i of the Flag Code reads, "The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever." Larry Brown is a friend of mine and a true patriot. Our flag is the symbol of freedom, not only at home but in every corner of the world that has not had the benefit of the freedoms that we all enjoy and so many take for granted. That same flag flew over the forward operating base that I lived in for a year in Baghdad. It was also the flag that's traveled proudly on the right shoulder of every soldier's uniform, as well as mine. While we argue over immigration here in the state, it should remind us of how powerful the pull is of all that our flag stands for. Please remember how valuable the guarantees of Old Glory are. Without the guarantee of freedom, a symbol is without meaning. Although I abhor the desecration of our flag, I know in my heart of hearts our freedom is what I cherish most. If the misguided and uninformed must burn, desecrate or dishonor our flag, they also, by default, acknowledge that which the flag stands for and who and what gives them the right to do so. Inadvertently, a protestor affirms what is really important. The flag symbolizes freedom. Paul Cobaugh Austin, Texas |
