Agoura Hills fire station to open
First one inside the city

The Los Angeles County Fire Department announced it will open its new Fire Station 89 in Agoura Hills on Thurs., June 1.

The 12,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility is at 29575 Canwood St. about a quarter-mile west of Kanan Road.

At a cost of some $4 million and months behind schedule due to construction delays, the station will include a training classroom and accommodations for future battalion headquarters operations. The station is the first to be located within the Agoura Hills city limits.

Officials breathed a sigh of relief.

"I'm very happy to welcome Fire Station 89 as the newest member of our county fire department family," Los Angeles County Third District Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said. "This brings to a total of 12 the number of fire stations constituting Battalion 5, serving the Santa Monica Mountains region, which will improve the coverage for residents throughout the area."

The city is currently served by Fire Station 65 on Cornell

Road. On June 1, jurisdictional station boundaries will be adjusted. One of the engine companies now at Fire Station 65 will be reassigned to the new station, and will respond to calls primarily north of the 101 Freeway, officials said.

One engine company will remain at Fire Station 65 to respond to calls primarily south of the 101 Freeway. The regional paramedic squad housed at Fire Station 65 will transfer its living quarters to the new station. The paramedic squad's jurisdictional boundaries remain unaffected.

"This is another addition to our network of fire stations to provide the best fire protection and life safety services possible," said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Michael Freeman.

To celebrate the opening of the new fire station, the community is invited to join Yaroslavsky, Freeman, Agoura Hills Mayor Denis Weber and other dignitaries for a station dedication ceremony.

The June 16 event will feature a display of local fire department resources, station tours, refreshments and an opportunity for the public to meet their local firefighters.
