Blood needed due to decline from holidies

Blood donations traditionally decline during the holiday season, raising concerns for the local blood supply, according to United Blood Services Central Coast. Each day, about 270 units of blood products are needed to maintain an adequate supply for those needing blood. During Thanksgiving week, daily blood donations averaged just 189 units. Blood has a 42day shelflife, and without adequate donations future supplies can be jeopardized, especially if an unanticipated emergency occurs.

People are asked to give at a blood center in Ventura, Camarillo or Thousand Oaks or at a nearby blood drive scheduled in Ventura County. Donation centers are open Monday through Friday and some weekend hours. Several weekend mobile drives are also planned.

Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment or to locate a center or blood drive nearby, call (800) 715-3699 or visit www.unitedbloodservices.org/ centralcoast.
