Rivalry renewed

Your editorial on the travesty of high school football several weeks ago was absolutely superb. Every facet of the issue was discussed with clarity. My thoughts on the Oaks Christian football issue follow.

Despite the Fighting Irish's loss to USC, congratulations are in order to the University of Notre Dame for its successful cloning of its football schedule to Oaks Christian High School (open borders on recruiting).

The Lions have been able to climb to No. 2 in the state by playing a predominately public small schools' weak schedule: Tri-Valley League opponents supplemented by Lompoc and Diamond Ranch high schools. This is identical to Notre Dame's scheduling of the notoriously three weak Division I service academies topped off with Stanford, North Carolina and Purdue. Rumor has it they are trying to schedule the Coast Guard Academy for next year.

Oaks Christian refused to play Mission Viejo and a national TV opponent this year, and Notre Dame refused to play Miami, Auburn, etc.

This scheduling should seek what Aretha Franklin sang about: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Earl Roth Oak Park
