Senior ball players think pink
PINK POWER-The L.A. Athletics are proud to swing a pink bat, painted in honor of those who have battled and survived breast cancer. The team took home the championship for the fourth time. The L.A. Athletics, managed by Bob Sherwin from Agoura Hills, played in the Men's Senior Baseball League World Series, an annual event held in Phoenix, Ariz.
The team "came to bat with pink," playing with a pink wood breast cancer awareness bat to honor family members who are battling or have survived breast cancer. Eight team members have relatives with the disease.
Team member and Calabasas resident Gary Firestone pledged $100 per hit and $1,000 for each home run to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Bob Sherwin paid tribute to his sister Candy, a twoyear survivor, by participating in the sport they have shared since childhood.
The ballplayers in the Athletics are 55 years and older. They won all of their tournament games, including the championship, to become fourtime winners of the competition. The Senior League World Series hosted more than 340 teams with 6,800 players from all of North America.
