Local teachers need our help

After reading the article "Las Virgenes teacher talks break down," I feel frustrated with a sense of real community disappointment. As residents of the Las Virgenes School District for 18 years and counting, we have always felt a sense of pride being in one of the finest school districts in the country. Yet my husband and I have donated school supplies and equipment on countless occasions because teachers actually lack essential supplies for their classroom like paper and pencils. This is an embarrassment for our school district.

On a teacher's limited salary, they often can't, and shouldn't have to, pay out of their pockets for these supplies for our children. They work countless unpaid hours after school, evenings and on weekends while our children reap the educational benefits of their dedication, and yet, of all the irony, we have employed a new superintendent that earns a six-figure salary.

Our teachers are our school district. We have to stand up for them as they stand up for our children. LVUSD, please pay our teachers their worth for the children's sake.

Get the school board members' e-mail and mailing addresses and let them know you expect much more out of our district on behalf of our teachers. Our kids deserve it. Don't leave it for someone else to do. Take five minutes to make a difference in our children's education. Teachers, raise your hands and ask us for our help.
