HI-TECH-Children's dentist Dr. Joseph Sciarra demonstrates his new dental laser equipment. The PowerLaser allows the dentist to fill cavities without giving patients a shot. Dr. Joseph P. Sciarra, a children's dentist in Woodland Hills, has acquired a Lares PowerLase HT Dental Laser, which can prepare a cavity for filling painlessly and without a shot.

Sciarra purchased the new laser and has received extensive training and certification in its use. The technique has been used safely and successfully for many years, but Sciarra is said to be one of the first dentists in the area to obtain the new equipment.

According to Sciarra, the laser doesn't cause vibration like a dental drill, and most patients don't require anesthesia.

"Patients love it-no injections, no annoying whining sound, and no numbness afterward," Sciarra said.

Although the laser does not replace the drill in every case, for most patients it provides a painless alternative.

The PowerLase HT laser also can be used to treat many gum prob

lems, usually without the need for anesthesia. An additional benefit is that laser treatment seems to reduce discomfort afterward and speed healing, dental experts say.
