Free pet microchipping program extended

By Stephanie Bertholdo bertholdo@theacorn.com

The Agoura Hills Animal Shelter has extended its free microchip program for dogs indefinitely.

Located at 29525 Agoura Road, the shelter will implant an informational microchip in dogs through the end of the year, and possibly longer, according to Denise Rosen, an animal control officer at the shelter. Ordinarily, the procedure costs $35.00.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently adopted an ordinance requiring all dogs to be implanted with a microchip that contains the owner's contact information. The county's animal control code also was amended to require all dogs in unincorporated areas be spayed or neutered.

The new law is intended to reduce the number of dogs euthanized at animal shelters.

Enforcement of the ordinance will begin in Feb., 2007. Residents could be fined up to $250 if their dog is caught without a microchip implant. Subsequent violations could result in a misdemeanor charge punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine up to $1,000.

Some dogs will be exempt from the spaying/neutering requirement, including certified service animals, dogs used by law enforcement agencies, and purebreds registered with recognized breed clubs. At risk older or sick dogs may also be exempt with a written confirmation from a licensed veterinarian.

Agoura Animal Shelter charges from $30 to $100 for spaying and neutering services depending on the dog's weight. Senior citizens and low income families can have the procedures done at a reduced cost.
