Finalists announced for Fernando award The annual Fernando Award Dinner, scheduled for tomorrow, Nov. 10, will honor the five 2006 finalists for the Fernando Award, the highest award for volunteerism in the San Fernando Valley. The award finalists' dinner will be at the Warner Center Marriott, 21850 Oxnard St., Woodland Hills. A reception is at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30. The cost is $100 per person and the event is open to the public. "The number of outstanding volunteers who give of themselves to the San Fernando Valley is truly remarkable," said Brad Rosenheim of Rosenheim & Associates, Inc., president of the Fernando Award Foundation. Nominees for the honor are chosen for their record of service and are supported by past Fernando Award recipients and various agencies and organizations in the Valley. "Each year," Rosenheim said, "we are pleased to honor the five finalists and their many years of service to the community." The Fernando Award will be presented next year to one of the five. The finalists and the organizations and individuals that nominated them are: The Hon. Armand Arabian: Served as both a municipal and superior Court judge in Van Nuys. Former member of the California Supreme Court and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the San Fernando Valley Bar Association. Nominated by Rickey Gelb, 2000 Fernando Award recipient and the San Fernando Valley Business and Professional Organization. Jill Banks Barad: Founder of the Open School in 1976, the first community-initiated magnet school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Nominated by the Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils and Kenneth B. Worthen, 1992 Fernando recipient. Dorothy Jean Jauck: Helped found the Canoga-Owensmouth Historical Society and Museum and is now serving as its president for the fourth year. A board member of the Friends of the Madrid for the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park. Nominated by the Canoga Park/ West Hills Chamber of Commerce and Howard E. Shirley, 1979 Fernando recipient Ed Rose: The co-founder of MEND-Meet Each Need with Dignity-and involved since 1971. MEND is the largest multi-faceted nonprofit social service agency in the northeast San Fernando Valley. Nomindated by MEND and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Pauline Tallent: Member of the United States Marine Corps Combat Correspondents organization and involved in the Marine Corps Toys for tots program. ALso on the board of directors of the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce. Nominated by the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce and the Southland Association of Realtors.
