A furry fairy tale

HAPPILY EVER AFTER-Isabella Sayyah, 12, of Oak Park and her pooch Groucho were made for each other. HAPPILY EVER AFTER-Isabella Sayyah, 12, of Oak Park and her pooch Groucho were made for each other. When I woke up that Sunday morning I remembered the day before and my hopes soared.

The day before we had gone to a dog show to meet a breeder. We had been looking for a dog for a while and had found a cairn terrier breeder we liked.

My family and I really wanted a dog, but because of my allergies we had to find a dog that wouldn't shed so our choices were limited.

We met one of the terriers at the dog show and decided that, if the breeder's pregnant dog had a male puppy, we would get him.

We have four girls and two boys in our house so my dad really wanted another boy to even things out. About a month later, the breeder called to say they had two female puppies and no males, so my parents decided that would not be the right choice for us. Our search continued.

I was really disappointed when I found out we weren't getting a dog yet. Still, we kept looking.

We found another dog, a Bouvier des Flandres, a breed that's much bigger than a cairn terrier. It's a nice breed and it doesn't shed.

That dog's name was Morro and he came to live with us on a trial basis.

While he was with us he mostly just laid around. My parents took him to the vet to see if there was anything wrong with him and discovered that the owners had lied when they said Morro was a puppy. He was really about two years old.

He also kept going to the bathroom in our house, not because he wasn't trained, but because he wasn't happy.

I was devastated when we had to give him back, but I knew it was the right decision.

By this time, it felt like we weren't meant to get a dog.

About six months later, out of the blue, my mom told us that a breeder was coming by to see if our house was fit for a dog. My brother and I pestered her with questions but she wouldn't say a thing more.

"Come on mom," my brother asked, "Why won't you tell us anything?"

"Yeah," I said, "Is it a wheaten terrier breeder?"

"Wait and see," my mom replied firmly.

The breeder was supposed to come around 5:30 p.m. We waited and waited. My brother and I were getting very antsy. Finally, about 6:30 I heard a car drive up and we all rushed out into the front yard.

An older man and woman got out of the car with a young furry wheaten terrier. The dog was playful, happy and beautiful.

Still, I didn't realize what was really happening.

Finally, my mom explained. My parents had found some people who couldn't take care of their dog anymore. My parents drove out to see him. They liked him but, because they didn't want us to get our hopes up and have them crushed again, they didn't say anything to my brother and I.

There were a lot of people looking at the dog but the owners finally decided on us. Soon after, they came to our house to drop him off.

My brother and I jumped for joy! Our very own puppy-at last!

We have now had our dog Groucho for over two years and we still love him to death. He is nearly three and is a great dog.

I hope everyone who is looking, finds the perfect dog and lives happily ever after, just like my family.
