Center for Civic Education receives $250,000 grant

State Superintendent of Public In- struction Jack O'Connell announced he is awarding a $250,000 grant to the Calabasas-based Center for Civic Education.

The funding must be used to build middle school and junior high school civic education programs. The cen- ter will determine which local edu- cation agencies should participate.

For this year's funding, the cen- ter will receive $225,000 in four to six weeks representing 90 percent of the total grant. The final payment will be made after the California Depart- ment of Education receives a project completion report from the grantee.

"The Center for Civic Education has an ideal program to teach chil- dren how to become involved in their state and local governments and their communities," O'Connell said.
