Protect your pet in emergencies

"It's important to consider your pets in your emergency plans" in case of fires or other natural disasters, said Warren Eckstein, an animal expert and nationally syndicated radio host.

"Pets rely on their owners for food, water and shelter," Eckstein said. "Remembering your pets in your emergency plans can help minimize their stress and increase their odds of survival in an emer- gency." A brochure for pet own- ers is available at www.ready.gov or by calling (800) BE-READY.

Three key steps:

+Prepare: Get an emergency kit including food, water, medi- cines and medical records, collar, ID tag, leash or harness, and a re- cent picture of the pet with its owner.

+Plan: Learn which shelters will allow pets in an emergency. Make certain someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets.

+Be informed: Know the types of emergencies that are likely to affect your region.
