HUNGRY FOR A WIN-Calabasas' Marcell Johnson runs sprints in preparation for Friday's showdown at Oak Park. Calabasas head coach Wayne Quigley rolled the dice last weekend and came up snake eyes.

With six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the Coyotes' season opener against El Camino Real, Calabasas scored a touchdown to bring themselves within a single point of tying the game.

Rather than kick the extra point in an attempt to even the score, Quigley ordered his squad to go for a 2-point conversion and the outright lead.

"It was 14-13 and I figured we needed the win and let's go for it," Quigley said. "We ran the 'swinging gate,' but they stuffed it."

Although the conversion attempt failed, the Coyotes, who haven't won a football game in over three seasons, refused to give up. They mounted one final drive, and with under two minutes to play, CHS quarterback Kevin May completed a 60-yard pass to the El Camino Real 20-yard line.

Unfortunately, the long gainer, which would've put the Coyotes in field-goal range, was called back when Calabasas was flagged for having an ineligible receiver downfield.

"It's kind of sad because it didn't look like he was too far downfield to me," the coach said. "It was a tough call."

Although it was a disappointing end to the night, Quigley said his squad's morale remains high heading into tomorrow night's matchup against Oak Park.

"They're still fired up and optimistic," he said. "We feel like we have a good team and they're proud of the way they played. We received a lot of complements from people. The fans thought we did really well, hung in there and were tough."

As good as they played in Week 1, Calabasas will have to take its game to another level if they're going to have any hope of shutting down a stout Oak Park rushing attack Friday night.

Led by a three touchdown, 130yard rushing performance by junior tailback Kyle Shorten, the Eagles defeated Cathedral 34-26 during its season opener at home a week ago.

OPHS head coach Dick Billingsley and defensive coordinator Brian Crum both praised the Eagles' offensive line for its performance in the win.

"We thought the defense would play very, very well, which they did," Billingsley said. "We were concerned about our offensive line, but they probably played one of the best games our offensive line has played in years. That was a plus."

Looking ahead to Friday's contest, Crum said his team cannot underestimate Calabasas, especially considering how the Coyotes competed against El Camino Real.

"They are an improved team, that's for sure," Crum said. "They are much better than they've been in the past. We're not going to take them lightly.

"They have an aggressive defense that runs to the ball and attacks well," he said. "Their quarterback, I think, is their best athlete. We're going to have to do a good job of containing him."

Quigley said he expects a quality game between two team that have faced off on a yearly basis for the past two decades.

"Oak Park has a good team and their program is really strong," Quigley said. "They do a nice job coaching and the kids are always well-prepared. I think we've got the best group we've had in a couple years, though. We're going to give them everything we've got." Weekend Schedule
