Happy birthday, Westlake Village

Chronologically speaking, 25 years old seems young, but it's a grown-up, mature city of Westlake Village that celebrates its silver anniversary this fall.

In 1981, a group of dedicated residents helped transform Westlake Village from a small ranchero in the country into a city built on promise. Today, Westlake Village boasts a strong municipal budget, a large number of thriving businesses, and neighborhoods that are clean and beautiful. Only a handful of cities in Los Angeles County can make that claim.

The residents of Westlake Village are indeed a fortunate group. They've realized big dreams, but haven't sacrificed their small town feel. While growth and opportunity abound, the desire to preserve the city's rural quality of life remains strong. The challenges ahead are many and it's up to the city leaders to steer the proper course.

But before worrying about the future, the residents should celebrate the past. And that's what they'll be doing during the next few months. Last weekend, the 25th anniversary party kicked off with a day of family fun at Berniece Bennett Park, the First Neighborhood park named after the city's former, three-term mayor. On Oct. 29 the focus shifts to the Westlake Village Civic Center where the birthday party activities will include a school fair, athletic events and more. On Nov. 18, the city's new Four Seasons Hotel will host a black tie gala. Happy anniversary Westlake Village. May the next 25 years be as good as the last.
