Fund established for hurt deputy

A relief fund has been established to help a local sheriff's deputy who was badly injured last month in the line of duty.

The fund was set up for Dep. Jim Mulay and his family. Mulay was critically injured in Malibu on Mon., Aug. 28 when an armed bank robbery suspect deliberately struck Mulay's motorcycle in an attempt to escape. Authorities said the suspect had just robbed a Wells Fargo Bank branch on Cross Creek Road in Malibu.

Charles Terreal Washington, 47, who was later arrested at his Los Angeles home, has been charged with 14 felony counts including attempted murder of a peace officer, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is seeking donations for the relief fund. Mulay, who has patrolled all the local areas served by the department, faces months of recuperation and rehabilitation. He underwent two surgeries and is suffering from liver damage, broken femurs and other injuries, authorities said.

Checks should be made payable to: Jim Mulay SRF Fund No. 402 and mailed to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station at 27050 Agoura Road, or call (818) 878-1808.
