Gypses in a Trunk finishes 12th season
Roxanne Diesel, director and producer of the series, said that the tale centers around "Bob, a henpecked fisherman with a nagging wife and two bratty kids." When Bob is out fishing one day, he accidentally hooks Arial, of "Little Mermaid" fame. The mermaid grants Bob three wishes, but the tale takes on many twists and turns. Local author, playwright and actor Chris Carnicelli wrote the family fairy tale. Cast members include Patrick Beckstead, Hayley Cariker, Kathi Janca-Gravino, Pat Newbert, Will Wilson and Carnicelli. "All performances are held in relaxed outdoor settings to allow children and their families to enjoy live theatre at its best," Diesel said. Performances are free to the public, but in the Gypsy tradition, actors pass the hat at intermission. Donations are appreciated since they help cover the costs of costumes and props, Diesel said. Performances of "The Fisherman and the Little Mermaid" will be held: Sept. 2 in Westlake Village at 11 a.m. at Foxfield Park and in Simi Valley at 4 p.m. at the Rancho Simi Bicentennial Amphitheater in Rancho Simi Park at the corner of Erringer and Royal. On Sept. 3, the play will be performed at Harbor View Park in Channel Islands Harbor at 2 p.m. The fairy tale will be performed in Camarillo on Sept. 9 at 11:30 a.m. behind the Community Recreation Center at 1605 E. Burnley St. and in Ventura at 4 p.m. at Barranca Vista Park, located at 7050 Ralston. Ample seating is available on the ground at all locations, and Diesel recommends bringing blankets, lunch or snacks. Pets should be left at home, Diesel said.
