Audubon Society plans ahead

The Conejo Valley Audubon Society has planned the following activities for September.

A field trip to the Santa Clara River mouth will be held on Sat., Sept. 2. Hikers will meet at the Las Posas Park and Ride at 8 a.m. Participants may see a variety of birds and should bring a spotting scope. The leader is Oscar Johnson. For information, call Dee at (805) 499-2165.

Those who want to explore the Tamarisk Trees and Sod Farms will meet at the Las Posas Park and Ride at 7:45 a.m. Sun., Sept. 10. Migrating warblers may be seen on this trip, as well as various plovers, pipets and possibly horned larks. For information, call leader Bets Buchanan at (805) 482-0063.

The society will host its first meeting of the year at 7:30 p.m. Mon., Sept. 11 at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology, 439 Calle San Pablo, Camarillo. This event will feature photo presentations of birds taken by members during the past year. The public is invited. For information, call (805) 987-2721.

Hikers can meet at Las Posas Park and Ride at 7:30 a.m. or at the end of Casper Road at 8 a.m. for a field trip on private property Sat., Sept. 16. Participants can expect to see numerous waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors and passerines. This trip is limited to 25 people. For information, call leader Tom Halpin at (805) 746-4598.

The society will host a joint boat trip with Ventura Audubon to observe birds, whales and dolphins around Santa Cruz Island on Sat., Sept. 23. The boat will leave Oxnard harbor at 8 a.m. and return at 10 a.m. Participants may bring water, lunch, snacks and jackets. The cost is $40 per person. The boat will not land at the island.
