Maureen Tamuri is the community development director, the chief commercial and residential planner for the city of Calabasas. But now Tamuri has a new title.

The San Fernando Valley Business Journal named Tamuri a Woman of Distinction at its fifth annual Women Who Mean Business luncheon. The award for service in government was one of those distributed in nine categories "to honor outstanding achievements made by women in business."

Tamuri said she was "shocked" to receive the award.

"Public service is my life," Tamuri said. "I think it's rare that a public servant, because I do consider that to be what our job is, it's rare to get acknowledged for the day-to-day work we do. I'm surprised and pleased to be in a group with these talented women."

Calabasas Mayor Dennis Washburn said, "It's wonderful that the San Fernando Valley region recognizes her contributions to the quality of life in the wider community."

Tamuri said her work involves planning city projects for 10, 15 and 20 years into the future.

She joined the city's staff in April 2004. Before coming to Calabasas, Tamuri worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District, the city of Los Angeles and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
