Archbishop to lead Los Angeles prayer event

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will host the 2006 Los Angeles Catholic Prayer Breakfast on Tues., Sept. 19 at 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles.

The event opens with Rosary at 6:30 a.m., Mass celebrated by Cardinal Roger Michael Mahony at 7 a.m., followed by breakfast and the program from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.

Keynote speaker is Archbishop George H. Niederauer. He was appointed as the eighth archbishop of San Francisco on Dec. 15, 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI.

Niederauer was born in Los Angeles and educated at St.

Anthony's High School and St. John's Seminary. He earned a master's degree in English literature from Loyola University in 1962 and a PhD in English literature from USC in 1966.

He was ordained to the priesthood April 30, 1962 for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was ordained bishop of Salt Lake City on Nov. 3, 1994, where he served until his appointment to the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

He also taught at St. John's Seminary from 1965 to 1992 and served as the rector from 1987 to 1992.

Mahony was appointed as the fourth archbishop of Los Angeles by Pope John Paul II on July 16, 1985 and installed as archbishop on Sept. 5, 1985. The pope created him a cardinal on June 28, 1991.

Born in North Hollywood, Mahony is the first native Angeleno and the third archbishop of Los Angeles to be created a cardinal. Mahony was ordained to the priesthood May 1, 1962.

To better minister to the 5 million Catholics in the archdiocese, Mahony created the five pastoral regions in 1986. In 1995, he announced plans to build the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to replace the earthquake-damaged former St. Vibiana's Cathedral.

Tickets for the event are $50 individual, $500 per table of 10.
