Calabasas

The Leonis Adobe Museum in Old Town Calabasas is recruiting docents to lead school tours for the upcoming school year. Persons who like working with children and are friendly, enthusiastic, and outgoing can become a paid docent.

Adobe docents help school children discover what it was like to live on a ranch in the 1880s and also share the story of legendary pioneer Miguel Leonis, known as the King of Calabasas.

In addition to his authentically re-created home, the Leonis Adobe Museum includes a ranch yard with animals, out buildings and wagons. Docents teach students about the livestock, which includes a longhorn, horses, sheep, goats, poultry and more.

Also part of the museum is a restored Victorian home relocated from Hollywood and a period park with gardens, arbors and a recreated jail of the period.

The museum especially invites retired educators to apply. Full training is provided, as well as the period costumes docents wear. Hours are flexible and docents receive museum store discounts.

Applicants can fax a note with their qualifications, interest, and availability to (818) 222-0862 or e-mail leonisadobe@aol.com. For more information, call Doris Butler at (818) 222-6511.

Malibu

The Malibu Lagoon Museum, on the grounds of the Adamson House, is looking for volunteer docents to provide tours of the oceanfront Adamson House historical site to the general public Wednesdays through Saturdays. There is a special need for docents available on Saturdays.

This is the premier park site of the California State Park system, overlooking landscaped gardens, the bird-dotted lagoon and waves of picturesque Surfrider Beach. The Adamson House is a showcase for the beautiful tile creations of the Malibu Pottery Company that flourished on the coast many years ago and is now defunct.

Training will prepare volunteers to greet the public, offer guided tours, work with groups and in the gift shop. The requirement is for docents to provide tours two days per month and be on site and on call for a period of three to four hours for tours during those days.

Training will be provided on six consecutive Tuesdays evenings and one Saturday afternoon. For more information, call Jules Hershfeld at (818) 889-5687.

The park is at 2001 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., opposite the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. The site is noted for its diverse horticultural displays with an international theme, brooks and fountains, a mature rose garden, and a historical presentation on the California Missions.
