Such a crackup

In a recent issue of The Acorn you reported on the problem of sidewalks cracking as tree roots grew and sought water.

I am visiting Washington, D.C. and the Washington Post reported July 2 on the District's use of sidewalks made from rubber that are designed to let water percolate through to roots. This eliminates the cracking problem and provides a much more "runner and walkerfriendly" and slightly bouncy surface. It is claimed that these sidwalks will last three times longer than traditional concrete ones.

It turns out this idea originated in Santa Monica and that a company called Rubbersidewalks in Southern California sells the product nationally.

Maybe the solution in Oak Park is to be found next door in L.A. County. If we make the conversion to this solution perhaps we will solve the tree root problem and eliminate knee damage for all our joggers. And all this from using recycled California tires. Jim Moynihan Oak Park
