Public misled about facts on Agoura Village

With regard to your June 22 article, I am disappointed you have parroted certain statistics about the just-approved Agoura Village Specific Plan without verifying them.

The AVSP area comprises 135 acres, parts of which are currently vacant, and parts of which include existing businesses that are slated for eventual redevelopment. The maximum allowed development for the entire area, under old zoning, was approximately 950,000 square feet of building.

Under the AVSP document, the maximum allowable amount of building is approximately 950,000 square feet of commercial property, plus up to 293 residential units. There is no upper limit in the AVSP for the size of the potential residential units. This combination could easily approach 1.5 million square feet of total building.

Therefore, the total maximum amount of building just approved by the city council could be in excess of 50 percent greater than what was previously permitted, not less.

Two city council members factually misrepresented this issue during deliberations that led to approval of the AVSP, and city staff made no attempt to correct their misstatements.

In addition, at least one council member factually misrepresented the allowed size of residential units that would be on upper floors, above commercial businesses, by claiming they would be roughly 1,000 square feet in size.
