Rights forfeited Did you know that the asset and forfeiture laws are so convoluted that you can be accused without any proof of drug dealing, arms caches, threats against the government, etc., and have your home, your bank accounts, your paychecks, any assets that you may possess forfeited while you are under investigation and that while you are under investigation your house may be sold and all your possessions, even clothing, can be auctioned off? You will have no money to retain a lawyer, no place to live and your family out on the street, as they can be evicted within 24 hours. The original intent of this law was to give law enforcement a tool to convict criminals, gangs, terrorists, etc., but because of the loose interpretation of this law, innocent people are being destroyed. If you are found innocent of the charges, which could easily take two years to resolve, you will be lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar from your home sale, furniture sale and other disposable assets. I can't help but wonder, are we really a free democratic society? I don't think so. The popular opinion is that there is free speech, but if you do speak out you will be investigated, loosely at first, but if you persist you could be persecuted without much due process of the law. As we all know, there is a lot of wire tapping of conversations, e-mails are being checked, cameras are being planted everywhere. You might think I'm paranoid, but if you are not, you could be the next victim. Keith F. Cornell Agoura Hills |
