Winning essay
     EXPERT WRITER-Red Oak Elementary School fourth-grader Troy Just wins first place in the "California Letters About Literature" writing contest. In the competition, students write a letter to an author, living or dead, explaining how their work inspired them or changed their way of viewing the world. Troy had written a letter to Katie Couric about her book, "The Brand New Kid," relating Couric's story to Troy's own experiences in changing schools. Troy will now compete in the national "Letters About Literature" contest.

Sumac's GATE students produce TV show
     Sumac Elementary School's 2006 GATE program concentrated this year on television production and is culminating with a broadcast premier on Adelphia Cable's local access channel, Channel 25, at 1 p.m. on Fri., June 9.

Lindero Canyon will graduate eighth graders
     Lindero Canyon Middle School will host a culmination ceremony at 5 p.m. Thurs., June 15 at 5844 N. Larboard Lane, Agoura Hills. About 387 eighth graders will participate in ceremonies on the upper field of the Lindero campus.

     California is one of just three states whose public schools fail to provide students with access to online magazines and databases. Local school librarians hope that will change.

     GETTING IN-Audrey Kahane, an independent college counselor, addresses a group of people interested in attending college during a seminar at the Agoura Hills Library recently. Kahane discussed why college admission is much more competitive now and what steps students can take to gain entrance to the school of their choice.
