Prepare your skin for summer sun rays As a licensed esthetician, Lauren Brent, of Lauren's Skin Spa, is frequently asked what can be done to ensure that her clients have beautiful, healthy skin for the summer. Since many people will be outdoors at least some of the time, a waterproof sunscreen of at least 15 SPF will be needed. Also, Brent advises, "Don't neglect your hands." Hands should be protected with a sunscreen to keep them supple and youthful. Self-tanners are great, Brent said, but they don't offer the sun protection needed to prevent damage. Also, for those with acne, beware of sun rays. The tanning process aggravates acne by increasing the production of cells, which can cause more blemishes to occur. Mineral makeup is a great choice since it offers an SPF of at least 20 and is waterproof and noncomedogenic (won't clog pores). Brent advised that now is not the time to get strong acid peels, as they leave skin more prone to hyperpigmentation (brown spots) and damage, since the top protective layer of the epidermis is being burned off. The best thing is to get nontraumatic procedures, such as facials, light treatments which increase hydration and, to look younger and toned, Brent recommends microcurrent treatments, which work to tone any part of the body, not just the face. Brent also recommends using fresh, organic products such as Eminence Organic skin care that feeds skin topically with fresh cherries, apricots, rose, lime, plum and carrot. She also advises sun lovers to drink lots of water and limit caffeine, since coffee and tea can be dehydrating. Herbal teas on ice are a great low-calorie drink.
