Las Virgenes okays Measure G Measure G6, the Las Virgenes Unified School District's $128 million bond measure, was approved with 64 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election. The bond needed 55 percent to pass. "We are very pleased with the overwhelming support for our schools," Board President Cindy Iser said. "The voters obviously value education and its importance to our community and the future." The new bond measure will cost homeowners an additional $25 per $100,000 property valuation, district officials said. What were once wish lists at each school have become to-do lists, with district officials poised to set priorities. Each district site has a stake in the funding, from Buttercup Preschool to the main district office. One of the first priorities is the expansion of Lindero Canyon Middle School in Agoura Hills. The new Yerba Buena Elementary School is well on its way to completion in 2007, and there's even money for a ninth elementary school in Calabasas. Upgrading school technology will be a top priority. The bond measure will provide ongoing funds for technology upgrades district-wide. New science labs, restrooms, emergency systems, two new high school performing arts centers and the replacement of aging trailer classrooms are also on the list of improvements. "The biggest thing that we wanted to say was thank you, to the volunteers and the committee that organized the campaign," said Sandra Smyser, the district's superintendent. A list of projects is available at every school site, the district office, and on two websites: www.lvusd.org and www.VoteYesOnMeasureG.com. |
