Discovery Nature Camp offered in Calabasas Mountains Restoration Trust's Discovery Nature Camp will feature special guest speakers at all of its summer camp sessions.The speakers will discuss wildlife, astronomy, paleontology, entomology, geology and other nature-related areas. They will introduce children ages 8 to 12 to a variety of outdoor experiences. Each camp session will center on a different theme and include guided hikes, working with scientific tools, hands-on activities, crafts, games and workshops with the guest speakers. The June 26 to 29 session features a wildlife specialist from The Nature of Wildworks who will introduce children to the world of mammals.An inventory of stream life and Native American culture will also be offered. The July 24 to 27 session features an entomologist and ornithologist who will bring along a variety of insect and bird species.Reptiles and amphibians will also be introduced. The Aug. 21 to 24 session features a paleontologist with dinosaur dig, an astronomer and a geologist who will bring a model of a large working volcano. "Discovery Nature Camp was created to 'unplug' children from their standard indoor activities and give them healthy and stimulating outdoor fun that not only helps them gain a deeper understanding of the importance of nature but a sense of connection to their natural world," said program director Susan Haugland. All camp sessions are from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Headwaters Corners, the Mountains Restoration Trust headquarters in Calabasas.
