High achieving students saluted at Westlake High

To celebrate and encourage student achievement, Westlake High School recently hosted "Recognition Rallies" just before spring break. Following the rallies, students who earned awards for outstanding academic performance were treated to a barbecue lunch.

For the first time, students in all grades at the school were eligible for academic awards. In a cooperative effort between the school and the Parent Teacher Student Association, four categories of awards were created, based on cumulative first semester grade point average (gpa).

A total of 621 students earned academic awards, including 81 seniors who received the highest honor, the platinum award for seniors who achieved a cumulative 3.85 gpa or higher in both their junior and senior years.

The gold academic award, for straight-A students and those with a 3.85 or higher GPA, was earned by 251 students.

The silver academic awards went to 77 students with a 3.75 to 3.849 gpa.

The bronze academic award was given to 212 students with a 3.5 to 3.749 gpa.

Parents or guardians of the students recently received letters notifying them of their child's achievement. Commemorative certificates are available upon request, courtesy of the Parent Teacher Student Association.
