Help to spruce up park trails

The California Department of Parks and Recreation and the National Park Service will co-host National Trails Day, "Experience Your Outdoors," from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., June 3 in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Volunteers from many communities will meet at the Backbone Trail at Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas to rehabilitate trails. Participants should bring

water, lunch, sunscreen, insect repellant, hat and gloves and wear sturdy boots, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

Volunteers may come for all or part of the day. There are many fun jobs, but this work is not suitable for children under age 10. Parental consent is required for youth participants under age 18.

Early sign-ups are recommended by calling the National Park Service Visitor Center at (805) 370-2301. Also call this

number for more information or driving directions to the site.

Community agencies and nonprofit organizations involved include the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association, the Conejo Group Sierra Club, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the Santa Monica Mountains Task Force of the Sierra Club and the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council.
