Oak Park school bonds explained After reading Tom Bregman'letter encouraging a no vote on thupcoming Oak Park UnifieSchool District bond issue, B6 and C6, I would like to offer a different perspective. The basis for Mr. Bregman'argument is that the bond assessment is unfair to new homeowners because their taxes will be proportionally higher as a resulof higher assessed values. Few people I speak with understand the new bonds are not an additional tax in total. While the actual tax is higher, B6 and C6 are replacing bonds that are soon to be paid off. As a result, these new bond issues will add less than $100 a year of additional tax on the average assessed value of Oak Park home. Now that the "mortgage" has almost been paid on the original construction of our schools, new homeowners are buying into this community without sharing in this expense. To make things more equitable, as Mr. Bregman suggests, should we also have an assessment on all new home-owners to contribute to the original school expense others paid? Should people who have several children pay more than those who have only one or none? I believe we should be thanking the trail blazers who have built and maintained these fine schools our families now benefit from, nocomplaining about the unfairness of it all. We live in a state that has allowed the quality of education and schools to deteriorate over the lasgeneration. As a small communitywe have the opportunity to make a difference. Our children, and the nexgeneration of families to whom we will eventually sell our homes, deserve to be educated in safe, technologically advanced schools. I strongly encourage you to vote yes on B6 and C6 on June 6. Christopher Gorelik Darian Cohen |
