Water district tour available

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District will offer the public a behind the scenes look at its potable water facilities on Sat., May 20.

Officials said the purpose of the tour is to give customers better insight into the district's local operations and help them understand the challenges the public agency faces in delivering safe, reliable water to area homes and businesses.

The free bus tour is scheduled from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The tour will begin at the

district's headquarters in Calabasas and move to the Westlake Filtration plant, where water is stored for emergencies and for summer use. Participants will gain an understanding of how pumping stations operate and water is delivered through the mountains and valleys. The local drinking water is imported from Northern California with the help of the Metropolitan Water District.

A complementary continental breakfast and light lunch will be served. Space is available to residents in the Las Virgenes service area on a first-come, first-served basis and registration is required. The tour is restricted to ages 12 and above and children must be accompanied by an adult. Moderate walking and stairways will be encountered on the tour.
